I see it what you're going for...

...and this is why I think you fall short.

This style of drawing really only works if it's "perfect" and by perfect I mean vector line work. All in all it's just not clean enough. If you really really don't want to work with the bezier pen tool (or in Illustrator) then I suggest at least going into your "Brush Options" and turning your space down to "0" that would account for alot of the "squiggliness" of the lines.

The other aspect of this is that if you're not going to use line work (and who wants to really) then you've got to have a stronger understanding of color theory. I know you used several different colors there but see how they all "blend" together especially in the top portion of the piece. Use high contrast to define your shapes rather than just slightly different colors.

If you convert your picture to greyscale you should still have very defined characters and objects in the scene.

So take those two things, splash at least a HINT of texture/lighting into the scene (even if that texture is glossy) and you're starting to move in the right direction.

Don't get discouraged! Just trying to help! Keep your chin up!

Thanks. I appreciate the helpful criticism, but I used this website called Tegaki E.
There are no brush options.
We're lucky they even give us an opacity option.
This is all hand done =(

lovely

Great job, gorgeous line work.

My only complaint is that I wish the saturation was a little higher because the colors look ever so slightly washed out and I think as a splash page it should be completely over the top.

BUT don't get me wrong it's really great!

great feedback, i actually get a lot of that comment from a few people about my stuff in general. i guess i'll have to get a little bolder with some of my colors.

thanks for the comment and grats to you on your castle crasher piece that hit the front page!

*highfives*

ok bear with me

It's not that it's "bad" it's just not REALLY good. I know you're going for the anime style or whatever, and that works for motion graphics but as far as stills go, they look flat. They need at least SOME line width variance, because nothing about this really pops.

some of the anatomy problems indicate the lack of a good foundation, it just looks alittle like you copied poses of other anime characters and adjusted the attributes to fit your characters.

And the background is pretty lackluster. blue ocean, blue sky, grey clouds, yellow sun, everything is basically just a gradient. Really think about the last time you saw something outside, sure the grass is GREEN, but it's also got yellow and red and blue and a million other colors in it that gives you the impression, that according to the light that's on it right now, it's green. Just food for thought next time you go to color something.

I'm not saying any of this to pick on you, I'm saying it because you do have enough ability that you COULD be knocking pictures like this, and your animations, completely out of the park. Instead of just having something that's passable as a lower end anime product.

Again please don't get discouraged or anything, just trying to be honest.
Keep at it!

P.S.
if you take anything away from this review let it be Line Width Variance, it'll really take your stuff to the next level.

I'm not discouraged. This style of art is not my complete ability. If anything it's just passable. It's just the style for the animation, and I did the art in Flash for it's artbook to fit the style.

It's been a while since I've done any serious art lately since I've been on the go alot, so the style just stays beyond simplistic.

I'll probably put some serious stuff up once I can find it on my external. I do appreciate the input.

AlvinHew responds:

Yeah, sometimes I feel Newgrounds needs more peace and light. I had hoped to bring a bit of that here with this piece.
